Europe was formed in 1979 in Upplands Väsby, Sweden, by vocalist Joey Tempest and guitarist John Norum. Originally performing under the name Force, the band gained early recognition after winning a Swedish rock competition, which led to a recording contract and the adoption of the name Europe.

Their self-titled debut album Europe was released in 1983 and showcased a melodic hard rock sound influenced by classic rock and early heavy metal. Following this success, the band released Out of This World and Prisoners in Paradise, continuing to refine their melodic rock sound.
